UKBC 2012 Northern Ireland Heat Results

March 20th, 2012

The final heat of the 2012 UK Barista Championships took place on Tuesday 20 March at the Old Courthouse in Hillsborough, County Down, Northern Ireland.

Hosts of the event Johnsons Coffee welcomed baristas from both Northern Ireland and England to compete.

Due to travel disruption one of the entrants had to pull out at the last minute, leaving a field of 4 to see who would become UKBC 2012 Northern Ireland Regional Heat Champion.

This event marked the penultimate time that the San Remo roadcrew set up the stage in 2012. Next stop is The London Coffee Festival – hosted by Allegra, where the Semifinals and Final will take place on consecutive days 28/29 April 2012.

The Northern Ireland regional heat was won by newcomer Joe Beaver from 6/8 Kafe in Birmingham, who put on an impressive performance to win all drink categories as well, taking home certificates for Best espresso, Best Cappuccino and Best Signature Drink.

Runner up was Conor Leverton from The Bottle Kiln, with Louise Smyth (Ground Espresso) and Andrew Gribben completing the order.

Joe’s signature drink was described on Twitter as “lemonade over ice, espresso floated on top. Science element to drink, density of coffee & sweetness of sugars balance” which sounded quote appealing and I’m sure many people are looking forward to seeing what he creates in the semifinal round. Even the competitors were congratulating each other’s drink standards via twitter as each performance took place.

Thank you to Rob Smyth (@smythrob) and Union Hand Roasted (@unionroasted) for keeping the twitter stream updated today with hashtag #ukbcht6, and to Suzi Salt and the Northern Ireland heat volunteers who helped make the event run smoothly.

We look forward to seeing as many people at The London Coffee Festival as possible.

Keep an eye out for the next announcement – Semifinalists!

12 baristas battled it out for places in the semifinal to be held at The London Coffee Festival on Saturday 28th April.

Lynsey Harley attended the event, her first official engagement as SCAE UK National Coordinator, and commented “The standard of this years Scottish Heat was very high, and it is pleasing to see local competitor Laura Timpany do so well.” She goes on to say ” I was very impressed with the creativity of the signature drinks and the baristas knowledge, and look forward to seeing a number of the competitors from this heat in the semifinals in London”.

Laura Timpany who works for SSP UK(*1) as Unit Manager and Head Barista at Glasgow Prestwick Airport won this event. She is the highest placed female barista in this years competition. UK Coffee Events: Cezve / Ibrik Announcement

March 14th, 2012

The SCAE UK Chapter is pleased to announce that we will be running a Cezve / Ibrik competition in 2012.

Originally scheduled to take place at Hotelympia, this event had received no entrants until the late afternoon prior to the event.

Now that we have at least 1 competitor, we have extended the application deadline to 15 April 2012, creating an opportunity for entrants to decide to enter, practice and compete. With nearly 6 weeks to prepare we are hoping for a decent number of competitors.

There are some amendments to the previous years rules which we invite you to view (linked from http://scaeuk.com/ibrik-competition.php)

The event will take place after the UKBC finals (whilst the scores are being collated and before the winner is announced)

Sand Heaters will be provided but entrants can also bring their own electric heaters to use.

Questions can be emailed to info@scaeuk.com and entry forms downloaded here

The winner of this event will be heading to Vienna to represent the UK.

Please spread the word and lets keep the UK firmly on the map. Aysin Aydogdu represented the UK and was crowned World Ibrik Champion in 2010. Can we repeat this feat in 2012?

Any interested parties should email glenn@scaeuk.com for details. We’d love to hear from you. This is a great chance to be part of the UKBC in Northern Ireland in 2012.

Thank you Denise Hall and David Wilson!

Denise has produced the running orders and managed barista liaison throughout the UKBC 2012 season, in addition to her full-time job running Coffee XTC with her husband Chris (who also qualified as a UKBC Technical Judge in 2011). This process often goes through several revisions before appearing online.

Prior to each event Denise has the unenviable task of neatly arranging baristas into their practice, setup, competition and cleanup timeslots, working in conjunction with David Wilson from San Remo who heads up the roadshow.

Once the baristas are all lined up and have been contacted the sheets are emailed across to Glenn Watson to be loaded onto the website and posted on the social media platforms.

David makes sure the machines and stage are carefully transported to each event, using a small army of helpers to assemble the stage and set up the 5 San Remo machines required for each heat, before dismantling and trekking to the next event, or back to his base in Devon.

Best Newcomer Competition – sponsored by Union Hand Roasted

The Northern Ireland Heat signals the end of the Best Newcomer Competition in 2012. Once the final scores are known the leaderboard for this competition – sponsored by Union Hand Roasted, and the main UKBC Top 20 leaderboards will be updated.
