2014 UK Cup Tasters and Latte Art Championship Results

Day one of The London Coffee Festival is over; a busy, busy first of the industry days which also saw the finals of our Latte Art and Cup Tasters Championships. Scores and champions below….

We’re pleased to announce the winner of the 2014 UK Cup Tasters Championship is Jason Gonalez, who scored 7 6.10 minutes, from Colonna and Smalls who will be going through to the World Cup Tasters Championship in Melbourne.

Second place goes to Alex Passmore with a score of 6 in 4.41 minutes

Third place goes to TJ Phllips who scored 6 in 6.36 minutes

Description:

Registration for the Cup Tasters Championship 2014 is now live.

The first round of the competition will be held at the Super Heat at Millennium Point in Birmingham on 12th February.

The 6 winners of the heat will go through to semi finals and then on to the finals, these will be held on 3rd April at The London Coffee Festival.

2013 UK Cup Tasters Results

SCAE UK Chapter and UK Coffee Events are pleased to announce the results for the 2013 UK Cup Tasters competition held on Thursday 25 April at The London Coffee Festival – hosted by Allegra

21 of the UK’s finest cup tasters battled out for the title and a chance to represent the UK at the World Cup Tasters Championship to be held during SCAE World of Coffee in Nice in June

The winner of this event was Jason Gonzalez of Colonna and Smalls (Bath).

Although the event starting times have been set, the final competitor performance times are being finalised. As some competitors have entered more than 1 event on a day the running order may change at short notice.

The provisional running orders are contained in the links below. Competitors will receive entry instructions by email early next week once times and entry details have been finalised.

The 6 UK Barista Championships Finalists will be announced after all 20 semifinalists scores have been calculated. The announcement is due to take place just before 1900

The Final of the 2013 UK Barista Championships will take place after the 2013 UK Cezve / Ibrik competition and is due to start at 1330 on Sunday 28 April 2013

Details of the 2013 UK Cezve / Ibrik competition will be released once finalised.

In addition to the UK Barista Championships, UK Coffee Events – the competition and events arm of the SCAE UK Chapter) runs the UK Cup Tasters Competition, UK Coffee in Good Spirits, UK Brewers Cup, UK Latte Art Championship and the UK Cezve / Ibrik Competition

Registration for these events is managed online at www.ukcoffeeevents.com and entry has been set at £25 per person per event

All of the events listed below will be taking place at The London Coffee Festival , hosted by Allegra Events

UK Coffee Events Update – some events are almost full

The introduction of online registration has proven itself to be hugely successful so far. We have almost filled a number of UK Coffee Events categories for 2013!

To make sure you don’t miss out on a place please register online at www.ukcoffeeevents.com

UKCE 2013 Host Requirements

Planning for the 2013 UK Coffee Events Competitions is underway and we are already receiving interest from Baristas.

We are seeking hosts for the 2013 season and have published the UKCE 2013 Host Requirements Document.

Please download the document and contact Jamie Banwell if you would like to be considered as a Host for 2013.

Traditionally the competitions run from late January to late March and the final will be held at The London Coffee Festival 25-28 April 2013.

Team UK at SCAE World of Coffee Vienna

At the 2012 SCAE World of Coffee exhibition in Vienna, Raul Rodas from Guatemala was crowned 2012 World Barista Champion, becoming the second producing nation barista to take home this coveted accolade.

Congratulations also to Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood of the UK for his 6th placing in his first World Barista Championships.

Incorporating the World Barista Championships, World Brewers Cup Championships, World Cup Tasters Championships, World Cezve/Ibrik Championships and the World Coffee Roasters Challenge, the SCAE World of Coffee exhibition took place over 4 days in Vienna – 12-15 June.

A huge thankyou should go to the SCAE Events team, WBC organisers and hoards of amazing volunteers who gave up their time to staff this event, making it the most memorable coffee experience I have had in the past couple of years.

I had the privilege of photographing the majority of WBC competitors and also access to the other World Coffee Events (WCE) competitions events taking place. Images from the SCAE World of Coffee 2012 can be found on my Flickr account and selected images will also be featured in trade publications such as Essential Cafe which will be running a full article in the next issue.

Lynsey Harley represented Team UK. Scores of 7 and 8′s were required to make the final in this fantastic competition which was well attended.

We’re immensely proud of Team UK who all put in amazing performances.

Peter Attridge (Latte Art) and Dan Fellows (Coffee in Good Spirits) are still to compete and will be in action in November at the Cafe and Bakery Show in Seoul, Korea.

UK COFFEE EVENTS – UK BREWERS CUP AND UK CUP TASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS

The SCAE UK Chapter held both the Brewers Cup and Cup Tasters competitions at The London Coffee Festival on Sunday 29 April 2012. These events, hosted by Allegra, focussed on brewed coffee and taste profiles.

The 2012 Brewers Cup attracted 12 entrants who put their brewing skills to the test using a Mahlkonig Tanzania Grinder and Bunn Hot Water Boiler to prepare and serve three individual beverages for a panel of judges. This years judges were Lynsey Harley(SCAE UK National Coordinator, Coffee Development Manager & Q Grader at United Coffee UK), Joanne Berry (Sales and Logistics at Mercanta) and Cory Bush (Trader / Supply Chain Manager at Falcon Commodities in Uganda).

In the Brewers Cup, competitors may utilise any whole bean coffee of their choosing and must also accompany their beverage preparation with a presentation, which were all informative, well thought out and in some cases quite entertaining too.

James Bailey (Prufrock Coffee, London) was announced 2012 UK Brewers Cup Champion after his performance, and will now represent the UK at the World Brewers Cup event taking place in Vienna as part of the World of Coffee Show, 12-15 June.

Winning the 2012 UK Brewers Cup was the icing on the cake for James, as he competed in the UK Barista Championships the previous day and came second in only his first year of competition. James also won the Best Newcomer prize category sponsored by Union Hand-Roasted Coffee and will be accompanying them to origin later this year.

Following the Brewers Cup was the 2012 UK Cup Tasters Championship. This competition draws in the best palates in theUKcoffee industry. Contestants have to slurp their way through 8 sets of triangle tests (three “cups” of coffee where two are the same and one differs) to spot the odd one out. The competition gets increasingly harder as the coffees in each test get increasingly similar. The results are instant as contestants lift their cups to discover if a red dot on the base tells them they have spotted the odd one out. It’s the coffee equivalent of a penalty shoot out!

The Cup Tasters competition had by far the greatest amount of audience participation, with the volume increasing as the number of correct choices was made. The top 6 tasted a second grouping of 8 triangles, which cupping coordinator John Sherwood, made as challenging as possible, using in some instances coffees from the same origin but with a different processing method. The coffees were brewed using Bunn brewers and roasted coffee beans supplied by Union Hand-Roasted Coffee.

A further £75 was raised for Coffee Kids as the final space in this competition was auctioned off to an audience member – Jamie Banwell, who participated in his first ever cupping competition.

The honour of representing theUKat the 2012 World Cup Tasters Championship goes toLynsey Harley, who entered at the last minute. The final round was tense, coming right down to the very last cup raised.

The UK Coffee Events were live streamed across the world on the video feed managed by the LSFX Productions team and arranged by the SCAE UK Chapter.

UK Coffee Events – Brewers Cup and Cup Tasting – Timings

The SCAE UK team is pleased to announce that the 2012 UK Brewers Cup and 2012 UK Cup Tasting events are both being held on on Sunday 29 April at The London Coffee Festival.

The first of these 2 events to take place will be the 2012 UK Brewers Cup, with 12 competitors.

This event is scheduled to start at 1030 and run until approximate 1330

The 2012 UK Cup Tasting event will begin at 1500 on the same stage with some of the UK’s top coffee cuppers battling it out to represent the UK in Vienna.
